The National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA) is conducting a 2013 Dental Salary & Job Satisfaction Survey at Health Centers nationwide through a partnership with Dr. Kenneth A. Bolin, a public health dentist and former FQHC dental director. One of the most frequently requested items from Health Center administrators and dental staff is information on salaries, recruitment of oral health providers, and job satisfaction related to retention of those providers. Terri Means previously worked as the Director of Operations for the Colorado Association of Family Medicine Residencies, Colorado Institute on Family Medicine and the Commission on Family Medicine providing program management, facilitation and logistical support for all three boards. Terri created recruitment and retention strategies for the nine family medicine residency programs in Colorado. Terri worked with various communities in Colorado to address physician workforce issues in rural and underserved portions of the state. Terri is a founding board member of Own Your Own Health a not-for-profit that encourages patients to take ownership of their own healthcare. Flu season started early this year with an increase in flu activity almost a month early1. The earliest reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2003-2004. Influenza often peaks in January to February, in 29 states are now reporting high levels of influenza-like illness. Each year, one flu virus of each kind is used to produce seasonal influenza vaccine 2.During 2011-2012, 132.8 million doses of flu vaccine were distributed in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older to protect against this potentially serious disease. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is sponsoring the Office Champions Tobacco Cessation Project, designed to integrate tobacco cessation activities into the daily office routines of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC). The facility must be an FQHC and there must be a physician on staff who is an active member of the AAFP. As part of the project, the AAFP will educate “Office Champions” through an online training module, live teleconferences, and a practice manual. Practices selected to participate will receive materials for patients, and practices that complete the program will receive $2,000 to cover administrative costs and will be recognized for excellence in tobacco cessation. Ms. Mundus is studying to become a pediatric public health dentist and working to improve access for dental services in her home state of Michigan and nationally. After receiving her B.A. from the University of Tennessee in 2011 in African-American Studies she has been working to develop children’s education programs, support community clinics, and serves on the Children's ToothFairy Foundation Board.
