Job Summary: Perform surgery and related procedures on the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions to treat diseases, injuries, or defects. May diagnose problems of the oral and maxillofacial regions. May perform surgery to improve function or appearance. Will need to consult with patients, discuss treatment options, treat patients, oversee post-op care, and coordinate with other specialists when necessary. Oral surgeon must stay compliant with all training, licensure, and keep proper documentation.


Required Skills/Abilities


Perform surgical procedures to extract impacted, damaged, and non-restorable teeth

Perform surgery to prepare the mouth for dental implants, and to aid in regeneration of deficient bone and gum tissue

Administer N2O and local anesthetic, when necessary

Familiarity with Maryland State Board guidelines for Oral Surgery Specialty

Education and Experience


DDS or DMD from accredited dental school OR

BDS degree internationally confirmed and additional residency in US to acquire MD licensure

Licensed to practice dentistry in Maryland

Duties/Responsibilities:


Consult with patients and analyze patient data to determine patient needs and treatment goals

Collaborate with other specialists, such as restorative dentists and orthodontists, to plan treatment

Record patient care by maintaining detailed notes of appointments with patients, including comments, tests, and/or treatments prescribed, and test results

Treat infections of the oral cavity, salivary glands, jaws, and neck

Remove tumors and other abnormal growths of the oral and facial regions, using surgical instruments

Provide emergency treatment of facial injuries including facial lacerations, intra-oral lacerations, and fractured facial bones

Treat problems affecting oral mucosa, including biopsies

Evaluate and treat TMJ problems

Prescribe medication to improve recovery and control pain after procedures

Executes HHC dental policies and objectives as stated in the Dental Department Policy Manual

Participates in Quality Assurance activities as determined by the Chief Dental Officer

Attend meetings, seminars, and conferences as deemed pertinent by the Chief Dental Officer

Relates to all customers, internal and external, in a courteous and professional manner at all times

Maintains electronic record in accordance with all DOH and states mandates for treatment records. Including but not limited to, Meaningful use requirements, PMP narcotic database, monthly chart review standards, and accurate log of all sedative medication used.

Regular, reliable attendance is a requirement of this job.
