Through the Race, Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) initiative, Ohio State is enhancing our world-class research program on race, inclusion, and social equity. Over the next decade, the university will add at least 50 tenure-track faculty members to existing scholars whose research can help to narrow social disparities in educational attainment, health outcomes, rates of incarceration, political representation, environmental impacts, and economic well-being. Adding scholars in focused areas will enhance the University’s outstanding faculty and inform solutions to intractable issues. RAISE is part of Ohio State’s larger initiative to expand the size and impact of Ohio State’s faculty over the coming decade, while also enhancing academic and personal resources to support Ohio State scholars, educators, and practitioners through all phases of their careers.

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the fourth largest public dental school in the United States and it is the only public dental school in Ohio. The college is divided into ten divisions with all major ADA-recognized dental specialties represented. The College has approximately 600 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs.

The College of Dentistry (CoD) at The Ohio State University seeks a candidate for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The successful candidate should have expertise either in health services, preventive oral care, community dentistry or related field, along with a record of funded research and peer-reviewed publications. This position will help to dismantle barriers that prevent or impede proper dental care to underserved populations by researching and devising strategies to eliminate those barriers. The primary appointment will be in the CoD at Ohio State University (OSU), and the position will maintain a close collaborative relationship with Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH).

The Race Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) hire will have access to both the ongoing underserved population research performed at NCH and at the CoD. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with community minded researchers from both NCH and OSU and will have the opportunity to test the validity of promising research results designed to help attract and treat those most in need of dental care. The ideal candidate will conduct research on social and cultural issues that may contribute to the avoidance of dental care as a first step toward making dental care more acceptable.

The core responsibility of this faculty member will be to direct expansion of the research program in community oral health and dental public health. They will work collaboratively with investigators and clinicians and other faculty at the CoD, NCH and with other health sciences colleges at OSU, such as the College of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Pharmacy, and/or Optometry. Collaborations with OSU’s health sciences colleges are facilitated because all these colleges are present on the same campus.

In fulfilling this responsibility, the candidate will be able to draw on the considerable clinical resources, including care delivery to large diverse patient populations at both OSU and NCH. Both institutions have specialization in behavior and health promotion. This translational research will aid the CoD and NCH in driving oral care innovation within multi-faceted healthcare delivery systems.

Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm

This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and drug and alcohol screening.

Required: Applicants must possess a DDS/DMD/MD and/or PhD or equivalent with a history of leadership, research funding, and productivity in the broadly defined area of oral health research.

Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.
