Title: Dental Hygienist


Reports To: Dental Director, Clinical Community Health Programs Coordinator, Administrative Services Coordinator Department: Dental, Community Health Programs Job Grade: Employment Status: Exempt


General Responsibilities: Performs dental measures designed to preserve teeth and prevent the spread of oral diseases. Required Qualifications: 1. BA of Associates Degree in Dental Hygiene 2. Certificate and licenses and registrations 3. Effective in working with pediatric patients 4. Ability to handle confidential material 5. Ability to work independently 6. Ability to provide services in non-traditional school and community based settings

School/Community Representatives: Daily Internal/ Frequency: 1. Patients: Daily 2. Parents: Daily 3. Program Staff: Daily Physical Effort/Environment: This position requires the use of finger and hand manipulation using instruments and dental equipment. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Constantly on feet. 


Work Schedule Demands: Thirty-two hours per week, 5 days per week, early morning hours required. Communication Skills: This position requires the ability to verbally communicate with patients and others clearly and effectively. Written skills. Confidentiality of Information: This position requires full access to all dental charts on a daily basis. Significant Job Functions:


Clinical 1. Educates patients in dental oral hygiene 2. Cleans calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath gums 3. Feels and visually examines gums for signs of disease 4. Applies fluoride and other cavity preventing agents 5. Exposes and develops x-ray film 6. Makes impressions, removes sutures and dressings 7. Administers local anesthetic agents 8. Provides sealants 9. Responsible for infection control, including cleaning instruments and equipment, etc. Administrative: 1. Make chart notes 2. Completes referrals to community providers 3. Provides written notes to parents on services provided 4. Completes encounter forms
