Position Summary

The Dental Home Director is an experienced Dental Provider who provides leadership and supervision to the clinical dental staff at KinderSmile Community Oral Health Center in Trenton.


As Dental Home Director (DHD) at a KinderSmile Community Oral Health Center (KSCOHC) Dental Home, your role is dedicated to advancing the organization's mission of delivering high-quality oral health care and education to underserved children, perinatal women, and families. You are an experienced Dental Provider who provides leadership and oversight of the Dental Home and its staff, delivering full-spectrum dental treatment and oral health education, while serving on the Executive Leadership Team to reinforce clinical standards, patient scheduling, staffing, and regulatory compliance—including OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control.


Working under the direction of the CEO and COO, you are an experienced, reliable, and detail-oriented self-starter with excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills and a passion for public health dentistry and community service. You are friendly, punctual, have an affinity for working with children, and are committed to balancing the clinical and administrative responsibilities of this role.


KinderSmile Foundation dental providers and staff are expected to adhere to the highest level of ethical conduct, responsibility, and integrity when caring for our patients and community, understanding the trust placed in us to prioritize their health and wellbeing.


This position requires a valid NJ Dentist license, current malpractice liability insurance and BLS or CPR certification. A DEA license and CDS license are preferred.

Position Details

The Dental Home Director’s schedule is full-time at 40 hours a week

The Dental Home Director may be scheduled to work off-site on specified days or half-days as part of the KinderSmile Oral Health Program (KSOHP). Off-site visits require flexibility as some may begin earlier than 9am. School visits may follow school day hours.

What You’ll Do:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Dental Home Director provides daily clinical and operational leadership of an assigned KinderSmile Community Oral Health Center Dental Home. Serving as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, this role is key to delivering high-quality patient care, supporting staff development, and maintaining the fiduciary and regulatory integrity of the Dental Home.

  • Core Duty 1: Clinical Leadership & Patient Care: Provide direction and supervision of dental services, delivering full-spectrum diagnostic, preventive, and comprehensive dentistry, and mentoring providers in KinderSmile Foundation's philosophy of Education, Intervention, and Prevention.

  • Core Duty 2: Dental Home Operations & Fiduciary Oversight: Oversee the Dental Home's fiduciary responsibility, including adherence to the monthly clinical and administrative supply budget, overseeing equipment ordering and repair, expense management, and monthly financial review with the Chief Operating Officer.

  • Core Duty 3: Scheduling, Chart Audits & Billing Integrity: Ensure proper scheduling of appointment lengths, timely emergency, restorative, and recall appointments, and inter-referrals; conduct weekly chart audits and oversee insurance submissions, CDT coding, and billing integrity in coordination with Front Desk Patient Coordinators.

  • Core Duty 4: Staffing & Schedule Management: Maintain and update Dental Home staff work schedules, approve time-off requests, verify Eaglesoft clock-in/out records, and ensure proper coverage and cross-training across dental auxiliaries.

  • Core Duty 5: Staff Development & Mentorship: Provide supervision, leadership, and mentorship to Dental Home employees and volunteers; conduct 90-day and performance evaluations, and coordinate with HR and Volunteer Program Coordinators on training, performance, and disciplinary matters.

  • Core Duty 6: Facility, Infection Control & Compliance Oversight: Ensure OSHA and infection control protocols are completed correctly and on schedule, maintain a clean and organized Dental Home, and coordinate with the Director of Compliance on quarterly equipment and hazard checks.

  • Core Duty 7: Program Integration & Community Engagement: Integrate the KinderSmile Oral Health Program (KSOHP), Perinatal Health and Wellness Program (PHWP), and volunteer programs (CSLP/GBAS) into the Dental Home, participating in offsite visits and linking patients to ongoing recall and follow-up care.

  • Core Duty 8: Leadership Collaboration & Reporting: Serve as an active member of the Executive Leadership Team and attend monthly Board meetings; submit a monthly Dental Home Board Report to the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Assistant following the KSF template.


Qualifications

The following are the minimum qualifications needed to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.


Experience 

Minimum of 3–5 years of demonstrated experience in a dental leadership role, such as Dental Director, Lead Dentist, or equivalent, overseeing a team of similar size and clinical scope


Education and Credentials

Graduation from a licensed dental school.

Current and valid NJ Dentist license.

Current malpractice liability insurance, accepted by KinderSmile Foundation's corporate liability insurance (MEDPRO)

Current BLS or CPR certification.

Valid DEA and CDS licenses (preferred).


Clinical Expertise

  • Demonstrated skill delivering full-spectrum diagnostic, preventive, and restorative dentistry to patients across the lifespan, with particular comfort and confidence treating pediatric, perinatal, and special-needs populations.

  • Working knowledge of public health and community dentistry models, including preventive care philosophies such as Education, Intervention, and Prevention.

  • Ability to mentor and calibrate other providers to a consistent clinical standard of care.

  • Proven ability to lead, supervise, and develop a multidisciplinary clinical team, including dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, and front desk coordinators.

  • Experience building staff schedules, managing coverage and cross-training, and conducting fair, documented performance evaluations.

  • Skilled at coaching and mentoring providers and support staff, and partnering with HR on training, recognition, and disciplinary matters.

  • Comfortable making sound, timely decisions under pressure in a fast-paced clinical environment.

  • Experience managing a department or practice budget, including clinical and administrative supply spend, equipment procurement, and expense oversight.

  • Working knowledge of dental billing integrity, including CDT coding, insurance claim submission, and chart audit processes.

  • Ability to translate operational and financial performance into clear reporting for executive leadership and the Board.

  • Proficiency with dental practice management and electronic health record (EHR) software; experience with Eaglesoft strongly preferred.

  • Working proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Calendar) for scheduling, reporting, and cross-team collaboration.

  • Comfortable adopting new systems and tools to support clinical documentation, scheduling, and compliance tracking.

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards, with the discipline to ensure protocols are followed consistently across the Dental Home.

  • Experience preparing for and supporting compliance audits and equipment/hazard checks.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or another language spoken in the Trenton community) a strong plus.

Dentists must possess fine motor skills and manual dexterity to perform precise, delicate tasks while using various dental tools and instruments. Additionally, Dental Providers should have the strength and stamina to assist patients in and out of the dental chair, as well as the ability to move and handle dental equipment as needed. Good vision and hand-eye coordination are essential for performing accurate and effective dental treatments. Dental Providers must also be able to tolerate exposure to various noises from dental equipment and maintain focus in a potentially noisy work environment.
